Who We Serve

Supporting youth on their journey

toward independence.

We serve children and adolescents ages 8–18 with intellectual disabilities, mental illness, and emotional or behavioral disorders.

Our Approach

We utilize a multidisciplinary approach to create a safe, structured, and nurturing environment where young people learn to make effective choices and build healthy relationships. We meet all of their core needs:

  • Psychological & Emotional: Supporting mental health and resilience.

  • Physical & Social: Fostering healthy body and interpersonal relationships.

  • Safe Environment: A supportive space designed for growth and autonomy.

Key Focus Areas

Our daily programs focus on essential skill-building activities to ensure well-rounded development:

  • Daily Living & Social Skills: Practical training for everyday independence.

  • Interpersonal & Recreational: Activities that promote connection and teamwork.

  • Community Integration: Helping youth feel connected and engaged with the world around them.

Integrated Services

To provide complete care, we bridge the gap between our youth and vital community resources:

  • Education & Vocational Training: Provided directly in partnership with the local school district.

  • Health & Mental Health Connections: Ensuring seamless access to specialized community health services.

Our Ultimate Goals

Empowering youth today for a brighter, more independent tomorrow.

  • Improve the child’s psychological health, emotional well-being, and overall functioning.

  • Assist each young person in mastering new skills to achieve the highest level of community independence.

our local programs or our

both local and

global impact

Hope Haven began in 1964 as a school for children with disabilities in Rock Valley, Iowa. Today, that same vision continues through local disability services across Iowa and Minnesota and our international wheelchair ministry around the world.

At home, we help people

build skills, independence,

and community.

Around the world, we help

provide mobility, dignity, and

opportunity.

Same vision. Two ways to live it.

He smiled so wide, his whole

face changed.

James is 9 years old and lives in rural Kenya. He was born with a spinal condition that left him unable to walk. For years, his mother carried him everywhere. Last March, a Hope Haven International team fitted James with a KidChair specially designed for rough terrain. It cost $300 to build. It changed everything.
