Home looks different for everyone. For Jon, home is now the place he shares with his sister, Shelly. Jon was already living in Shelly’s home when she became one of Hope Haven’s first Host Home providers. What started as a practical next step quickly grew into something far more meaningfu l. As Shelly shared, “Opening our home to Jon was a blessing we didn’t know we needed.” Through Hope Haven’s Host Home program, individuals with disabilities live in the homes of carefully selected providers who offer guidance, companionship, and everyday support. Host Homes are just one of several residential options at Hope Haven, alongside staffed community living homes, because no two individuals require the same level or style of care. What matters most is creating a place where people can live safely, grow their independence, and feel truly included. For Jon, that environment means being part of everyday family life, whether that’s grocery shopping and shared meals or being able to help with Shelly’s in-home daycare. “Living here makes me feel happy,” Jon says. For Shelly’s family, the experience has been transformative. “We’ve all become more patient and understanding,” she shares. “My boys have learned gratitude, acceptance, and what it means to truly welcome someone into your life.” That mutual impact is what makes Host Homes unique. “It doesn’t feel like a job,” Shelly explains. “It’s more of a relationship. You get to help someone feel independent, yet safe.” She was quick to add that the impact goes both ways. As she puts it, “You just might meet your best friend.” Because of supporters like you, individuals like Jon have the opportunity to live in a home where they are supported and valued — not just as clients, but as people. Your generosity makes it possible for Hope Haven to offer a range of residential supports, creating safe, stable, relationship-centered living options for individuals with disabilities right here in our communities. “Be devoted to one another in love. “Her screams are something I won’t ever forget,” said Jenna Ramirez, Hope Haven’s Mental Health Manager. “As my daughter sat on the nearest part of our roof, trying to calm her down and distract her while the rescue team lifted her out of the wheelchair and into the boat… the screaming of terror that could be heard for blocks.”

On Saturday, June 22, many communities around us faced trials due to devastating flooding, bringing fear into many hearts. Numerous individuals lost their homes and possessions, while businesses, schools, and churches also suffered extreme damage. In times when we don’t know what to do, the only place we can turn is to our heavenly Father. God knows that in His world we will face many trials, but throughout His word, He has given us encouragement and comfort. One of the Bible verses that He uses to comfort us is Isaiah 43:2 “When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. For I am the Lord, your God.”

As you may know, the flood damaged Hope Haven’s main office building in Rock Valley, offices in Sheldon, Spencer, and Rock Rapids, eight community living facilities with a total of 50 residents displaced, and the Hope Haven International Ministries (HHIM) warehouse in Rock Valley. We estimate $3 million in property damage due to the flood.

Life can take us through rough waters, and we may feel like we are drowning, but God will not leave or forsake us in our times of trouble. As we continue to recover, two of the waiver homes were torn down. We are waiting on FEMA to determine our next course of action, but we have already purchased two new homes in Spencer, and we have repaired one home in Rock Valley and moved the residents into their homes. In Spencer, we sold what was left of our former office and purchased a new building on the north end of town to continue operations there. In Rock Valley, we are in the process of rewiring and adding new sheetrock to our HHIM warehouse. The equipment has all been cleaned and our HHIM shop is building wheelchairs again.

This time of year reminds us how blessed we are to have supporters like you. Pouring out your hearts to believe in the work we do at Hope Haven to serve each individual’s needs locally and around the world. Your contributions and prayers empower us to overcome challenges and make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve.
