Inspirational Quotes for the New Year

There is a certain kind of peace that comes when you know someone you love is safe. One mother, Jeanelle Stokes, shared that before Smart Living, there was always a quiet tension. Even when things were going well, that lingering question remained: What if something happens when no one is right there? At Hope Haven, we believe safety and independence should not compete with one another. They should work together. That belief is what led to the development of Smart Living. Smart Living blends personalized technology, remote support, and in-person care to help individuals live more independently while maintaining a dependable safety net. From our Remote Support Center in Spirit Lake, trained professionals are available 24 hours a day, ready to respond when assistance is needed. Jeanelle put it simply: “I don’t feel like I have to hover anymore. I know someone is there if he needs help.” Homes are equipped with thoughtfully selected tools such as motion sensors, wearable devices, secure video connections, and interactive reminders, all tailored to the member’s individual needs. These tools aren’t designed to replace care, but to enhance it. For Jeanelle’s son Jerrod, constant staff presence was increasing his anxiety. When part of his support transitioned to remote monitoring, there was a noticeable change. Within days, he began reaching out just to say, “Hi, I’m okay.” With that change, he had more space while still knowing support was just a call away. As Scripture reminds us, “The Lord himself watches over you.” - Psalm 121:5 Smart Living reflects that same premise of watchful care, encouraging independence while still keeping support within reach. As this initiative expands, more individuals will have the opportunity to live confidently in their own homes, and more families will experience the peace that comes from knowing help is always near. Your generosity makes that growth possible. It allows us to expand Smart Living into more homes, strengthen our Remote Support Center, and ensure that independence is never separated from safety. We are blessed at Hope Haven to witness inspirational moments every single day. A lot of what we see and hear and feel can’t be put into words; however this is where the internet can be an immensely valuable tool. Here are five of our favorite inspirational quotes that sum up what we teach our clients and how we inspire ourselves. Here’s to leaving each person and each day better than we found them.

Start. Use. Do.

Arthur Ashe started playing tennis when he was seven years old and his consistent commitment to the sport made him the only black man ever to win the singles title at Wimbledon the US Open and the Australian Open. Coupled with his work raising awareness for HIV and AIDS and supporting its patient communities he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1993 four months after he died from complications of the disease. His life was a testament to using the gifts we are given and the experiences we have earned to make the most of what we have to offer the world.

“Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.” Arthur Ashe

Be the best YOU.

This is something we strive to teach our clients—and ourselves—every single day. Happiness isn’t derived from comparing ourselves to others (quite the opposite actually). Happiness comes from embracing where you are in this moment and how it relates to where you’ve been and where you want to go. We appreciate that the author of this quote hasn’t been discovered as it forces us to focus on the words and to inspire ourselves to make the most of each day.

“The only person you should try to be better than is the person you were yesterday.” Unknown

Plant good seeds.

In this day and age it’s hard not to focus on the outcome—how much you’ll get done how much money you’ll make if in the end you’ll be happy or successful or liked. This quote reminds us that to focus on the harvest means you could lose sight of what it takes for it to grow. Placing your time energy and love in the planting ensures a good harvest whether or not you are able to see all the ways it ripens.

“Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds you plant.” Robert Louis Stevenson

Decide to try.

At 5’ 3” Yolanda Gail Devers packed explosive power within her small frame and is only the second woman in history to successfully defend an Olympic 100-meter title adding a third gold medal in 1996.

“Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.” Gail Devers three-time Olympic gold medalist.

Join together.

It’s hard to believe that there are generations entering the world who have never heard of Helen Keller an American author political activist and speaker who was born deaf and blind in 1880 and who went on to redefine abilities and disabilities for millions of people.

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” Helen Keller

While this quote image is impactful with its combination of 10 strong words from an equally strong woman it’s worth representing here in this paragraph in its entirety.

“My Teacher has told you how a word from her hand touched the darkness of my mind and I awoke to the gladness of life. I was dumb; now I speak. I owe this to the hands and hearts of others. Through their love I found my soul and God and happiness. Don’t you see what it means? We live by each other and for each other. Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much. Only love can break down the walls that stand between us and our happiness.”
