On August 17, President Bush signed into law the Pension Protection Act of 2006. This new law allows tax-free gifts to be made to charities from IRAs.
Here are some of the key provisions:
*Gifts are tax-free up to $100,000 per year
*Gifts will qualify for all or part of required minimum distributions
*This provision will apply for 2006 and 2007 only
* IRA holder must be age 70 ½ or older
*Gifts must be an outright gift to a charitable organization
*Gifts may only be made from traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs
