Hope Haven's Niessink homes (East and South) serve children with mental retardation as the primary diagnosis but they also serve children with a variety of behavior disorders and mental illnesses. The ages of the student who are served range from 8 through 21 years of age.
Niessink provides a home-like environment where students are provided opportunities to learn a variety of social skills as well as many independent living skills. Everything is determines by their individual needs. Parents are considered to be a major part of the treatment team. Parents, along with the staff, the student, and the caseworker, develop a treatment plan that guides the skills the student is to learn and develop while living in the home.
There are 4 students per home with two-day staff to supervise these four students. Most of the students are unable to live in their parent's home due to behavior issues. These behavior issues are addressed and worked on as needed. The overall goal is to help the student develop into a productive adult who is able to display acceptable behaviors in society.
Students attend school in Rock Valley and the surrounding AEA 4 schools. These schools provide the educational needs according to the student's Individual Educational Plan
